17) As soon as : __ल्या __ल्या (_lyA __lyA)
The suffix ल्या(lyA) is appended to past tense form of the verb and it is said twice.
As soon as he came -> तो आल्या आल्या (to AlyA AlyA) …
As soon as she saw -> तीने बघितल्या बघितल्या (tIne baghitalyA baghitalyA )
As soon as they become -> ते झाल्या झाल्या (te jhAlyA jhAlyA)
Another way is to append “ताच”(tAch) to the verb stem.
As soon as he came -> तो येताच (to yetAch)…
As soon as she saw -> तीने बघताच (tIne baghatAch )
As soon as they become -> ते होताच (te hotAch)
18) Once : की (kI)
In English, we say “Let me know once he comes”. Marathi sentence uses past tense form. So literal translation may sound like “He came then tell me”
तो आला की मला सांग ( to AlA kI malA sAMg )
Once I see your story I will give you review -> “I saw your story then I will give you review ” ->मी तुझी गोष्ट बघितली की अभिप्राय देईन (mI tujhI goShT baghitalI kI abhiprAy deIn )
19) Rather than, Instead of :
When using with the noun ->__च्या ऐवजी (chyA aivajI )
When using with the verb -> ण्या ऐवजी (NyA aivajI )
Rather than surrendering a soldier will accept death-> शरण जाण्याऐवजी सैनिक मरण स्वीकारेल (sharaN jANyAaivajI sainik maraN svIkArel)
I will take tea rather than coffee -> मी चहाच्या ऐवजी कॉफी घेईन (mI chahAchyA aivajI coffee gheIn )
20) so that : जेणेकरून ( jeNekarUn )
I will work hard so that I will win -> मी परिश्रम करीन जेणेकरून मी यशस्वी होईन (mI parishram karIn jeNekarUn mI yashasvI hoIn )
We should avoid plastic so that there will be less pollution -> आपण प्लास्टिक टाळले पाहिजे जेणेकरून प्रदूषण कमी होईल ( ApaN plAsTik TALale pAhije jeNekarUn pradUShaN kamI hoIl )
21) Whereas : उलट (ulaTa), उलटपक्षी (ulaTapakShI ), प्रत्यक्षात ( pratyakShAt)
He cheated me whereas I was helping him:-
त्याने मला फसवले उलट/ उलटपक्षी मी त्याला मदत करत होतो ( tyAne malA phasavale ulaT/ ulaTapakShI mI tyAlA madat karat hoto )
The government told prices declined whereas inflation rose:-
सरकारने सांगितले की भाव कमी झाले आहेत उलट/ उलटपक्षी/प्रत्यक्षात महागाई वाढली ( sarakArane sAMgitale kI bhAv kamI jhAle Ahet ulaT/ ulaTapakShI/pratyakShAt mahAgAI vADhalI)
22) Whether : का (kA )
Whether ____ or not:- का नाही (kA nAhI )
I did not know whether he is going ->
तो जाणार आहे का मला माहित नाही (to jANAr Ahe kA malA mAhit nAhI )
She could not realize whether she should speak or not ->
तीने बोलावे का नाही तीला कळले नाही (tIne bolAve kA nAhI tIlA kaLale nAhI )
23)Otherwise: नाहीतर (nAhItar)
Do this otherwise you will not win:- हे कर नाहीतर तू जिंकणार नाहीस (he kar nAhitar tU jiMkaNAr nAhIs )
He should inform me it immediately otherwise I will not come to know :- त्याने मला लगेच कळवले पाहिजे नाहीतर मला कळणार नाही ( tyAne malA lagech kaLavale nAhItar malA kaLaNAr nAhI)
