In the previous post, we saw that in Marathi special forms of pronouns are appended with a preposition.

The preposition “To” in English is ला ( lA ) in Marathi. But preposition “To” is handled a bit differently in Marathi.
Special forms are created incorporating ला ( lA ). So no need to add ला ( lA ) again.
e.g. “to him” in English is त्याला ( tyAlA ) in Marathi.
Notice this special form already has ला ( lA ) in it. So no need to add ला ( lA ) again.

So full sentence will be
Give it to him -> हे त्याला दे ( he tyAlA de )

Below table shows these special form for all pronouns

The pronoun for “self” is स्वतः (svatH) and its सामान्य रूप (sAmAnya rUp) is same i.e. स्वतः (svatH). So with the preposition “To” form is स्वतःला(svatHlA)

Old style Marathi using स(sa)

In old style Marathi, formal/legal documents or sometimes in news you will see prefix स(sa) instead of ला(lA). It will be generally used for third person object. So,
To him/ To it = त्याला(tyAlA) = त्यास(tyAs),
To her = तिला (tilA) = तीस (tIs)
To then = त्यांना (tyAMnA) = त्यांस (tyAMs)
To you(with respect and very formal) = आपल्याला (ApalyAlA) = आपणांस (ApanAs)

धुम्रपानास मनाई आहे (dhumrapAnAs manAI Ahe) = There is prohibition to smoking
सर्व पाहुण्यांस भेटवस्तू मिळेल (sarv pAhuNyAMs bheTavastU miLel) = There will be gift to all guests.

For first and second person; forms are bit different are hardly used these days
To me = मला(malA) = मज (maja)
To you = तुला(malA) = तुज (maja)
You will see these words in old “Abhanga”s – poetry” by Marathi saints.
