Friends, I can understand that “Simple Past Tense” was not that “simple” 🙂 🙂
So to give you some relief here comes “Past Continuous Tense”. It follows a good old structure like “future continuous”.
Here the verb is formed according to subjective/doer of the action like future Continuous Tense

The sentence structure in the Past Continuous Tense is:

Pronoun         Verb+त (t)                       Form of असणे(“asaNe”) in Simple Past tense
मी ( mI )           चाल(chAl) + त (t)              होतो ( hoto )

Example 1:

For I(male) Form of असणे(“asaNe”) in Simple Past Is होतो (hoto)
The full sentence
I was walking –> मी ( mI ) चाल(chAl) + त (t) होतो (hoto) –> मी चालत होतो (mI chAlat hoto)

Example 2:

For I(Female) Form of असणे(“asaNe”) in Simple Past Is होते (hote)
The full sentence
I was walking –> मी ( mI ) चाल(chAl) + त (t) होते (hote) –> मी चालत होते (mI chAlat hote)

Example 3:

For They (Plural of She) Form of असणे(“asaNe”) in Simple Past Is होत्या (hotyA)
The full sentence
They were watching –> त्या (tyA) बघ(bagh) + त (t) होत्या (hotyA )–> त्या बघत होत्या (tyA baghat hotyA)
