In previous lessons, we have seen conjunctions that are used to combine two phrases/sentences. In this lesson, I will highlight how two sentences are combined by changing the form of verb असणे (asaNe)
Consider an example with three small sentences which are related to each other
This is an old video. I saw it just now. I am sharing it today -> हा जुना व्हिडिओ आहे. मी आत्ता बघितला. मी आज शेअर करत आहे (hA junA vhiDio Ahe. mI AttA baghitalA. mI Aj shear karat Ahe)
Now to make it more meaningful you will say it
This is an old video, yet I saw it just now so I am sharing it today -> हा जुना व्हिडिओ असला तरी मी आत्ता बघितल्यामुळे आज शेअर करत आहे (hA junA vhiDio asalA tarI mI AttA baghitalyAmuLe Aj shear karat Ahe)
So while combining the first two sentence we changed “आहे(Ahe)” to असला तरी(asalAtarI) and बघितला (baghitalA) to बघितल्यामुळे(baghitalyAmuLe )
The second change बघितला -> बघितल्यामुळे is discussed in detail in another lesson of preposition with verbs

Change in form of असणे(asaNe)
Pronoun in English | Pronoun in Marathi | Form of असणे (“asaNe”) | Transliteration |
---|---|---|---|
I (male) | मी | असलो | asalo |
I (female) | मी | असले | asale |
we | आम्ही | असलो | asalo |
we ( listener including) | आपण | असलो | asalo |
You (singular male) | तू | असलास | asalAs |
You (singular female) | तू | असलीस | asalIs |
You (plural) | तुम्ही | असलात | asalAt |
He / That (m.) / This (m.) | तो / तो / हा | असला | asalA |
She / That (f.)/ This (f.) | ती / ती / ही | असली | asalI |
It / That(n.) / This (n.) | ते / ते / हे | असले | asale |
They (Plural of He) /Those (m.) /These (m.) | ते / ते / हे | असले | asale |
They (Plural of She) / Those (f.) / These (f.) | त्या / त्या / ह्या | असल्या | asalyA |
They (Plural of it) / Those (n.) / These (n.) | ती / ती / ही | असली | asalI |
And सामान्यरूप form for all gender and multiplicity is असल्या(asalyA)
Example 1) Consider sentences in the present tense.
This is an old song. I heard is today -> हे जुने गाणे आहे. मी आज ऐकले (he june gANe Ahe. mI Aj aikale)
गाणे(gANe) is neuter singular so we will use असले(asale)
Though it is an old song, I heard it today -> हे जुने गाणे असले तरी मी आज ऐकले (he june gANe asale tarI mI Aj aikale)
Example 2) This form is used even in past tense sentences.
My wife was standing there. He asked me about my girlfriend. -> माझी बायको तिथे उभी होती. त्याने माझ्या मैत्रिणीबद्दल विचारले (mAjhI bAyako tithe ubhI hotI. tyAne mAjhyA maitriNIbaddal vichArale)
We can combine it;
My wife was standing there yet he asked me about my girlfriend. -> माझी बायको तिथे उभी असली तरी त्याने माझ्या मैत्रिणीबद्दल विचारले (mAjhI bAyako tithe ubhI hotI. tyAne mAjhyA maitriNIbaddal vichArale)
Example 3) We can also have preposition added to this form.
The policeman was watching him closely. He did not dare to run away. -> पोलिस त्याला बारकाईने बघत होता. त्याने पळून जायचे धाडस केले नाही (polis tyAlA bArakAIne baghat hotA. tyAne paLUn jAyache dhADas kele nAhI)
As the policeman was watching him closely he did not dare to run away. -> पोलिस त्याला बारकाईने बघत असल्यामुळे त्याने पळून जायचे धाडस केले नाही(polis tyAlA bArakAIne baghat asalyAmuLe tyAne paLUn jAyache dhADas kele nAhI)
Here we changed form to असला(asalA), its सामान्यरूप is असल्या(asalyA). So we appended preposition मुळे(muLe) to it. Making full form as असल्यामुळे (asalyAmuLe)
Instead of असल्यामुळे (asalyAmuLe) we can also use असल्याने(asalyAne)
पोलिस त्याला बारकाईने बघत असल्याने त्याने पळून जायचे धाडस केले नाही (polis tyAlA bArakAIne baghat asalyAne tyAne paLUn jAyache dhADas kele nAhI)
Example 4)
Huge monsters are coming towards me. I had an illusion ->ते येत आहेत. मला असे वाटले (te yet Ahet. malA ase vATale)
I had an illusion of huge monsters are coming towards me. ->मोठे राक्षस माझ्याजवळ येत आहेत. असा मला भास झाला (moThe rAkShas mAjhyAjavaL yet Ahet. asA malA bhAs jhAlA)
मोठे राक्षस माझ्याजवळ येत असल्या सारखा मला भास झाला (moThe rAkShas mAjhyAjavaL yet asalyA sArakhA malA bhAs jhAlA)
