In previous lesson Sentence using “Used to” phrase we have seen “Used to” sentences in Marathi. In this lesson we will see same sentences in old style. You will find elderly people using this style in speaking or writing. It is less used by new generation. So you need not use it while speaking but you should understand it if you come across such sentences.

Old style 1

Sentence structure is :

Pronounverb+ त(t)form of असणे(asaNe) i.e. असे/असू/असत (ase/asu/asat)

For singular pronouns/nouns form is असे (ase)
For plural pronouns/nouns form isअसत asat. An exception is for “we”. For “we” the form is असू (asu)

Examples :
I used to eat mango -> मी आंबा खात असे (mI AMbA khAt ase)
Kauahik used to eat mango -> कौशिक आंबा खात असे (kaushik AMbA khAt ase)
Kaushik, Guru, sundar used to meet every day -> कौशिक,गुरू,सुंदर रोज भेटत असत (kaushik, gurU,suMdar roj bheTat asat)
My friends and I used to play cricket -> माझे मित्र आणि मी क्रिकेट खेळत असू (mAjhe mitr ANi mI krikeT kheLat asU)

My friends and I are indirect “we”, so “असू” is used

असत(asat) is sometimes dropped from sentences with third person plural

Kaushik, Guru, sundar used to meet every day -> कौशिक,गुरू,सुंदर रोज भेटत (kaushik, gurU,suMdar roj bheTat asat)
They used to watch the news every day -> ते रोज बातम्या बघत (te roj bAtamyA baghat)

Old style 2

Another older style is found for first and third-person singular. It is appending ई(I) to the verb.
For verbs ending with sound “अ”(a) instead of ई(I) ए(e) can also be appended

Examples :

I used to eat mango मी आंबा खाई (mI AMbA khAI)
Kauahik used to eat mango कौशिक आंबा खाई (kaushik AMbA khAI)

I used to see मी बघे/बघी (mI AMbA baghe/baghI)
Kauahik used to see कौशिक बघे/बघी (kaushik AMbA baghe/baghI)

I used to do मी करे/करी (mI AMbA kare/karI)
Kauahik used to do कौशिक करे/करी (kaushik AMbA kare/karI)
