Listen words in this lesson
Addressing in-laws
सासरे (sAsare) and सासू (sAsu) is the name of the relation. But actual words for calling them is सासरेबुवा (“sAsarebuva” ) and सासुबाई ( “sAsubAI”) respectively. But it is a too old style. Especially in learned families or urban families we simply call them बाबा(bAbA) and आई (AI) to show the closeness.
It is a difference in Indian culture and western Indian. In India, we comfortably call any unknown lady as काकू (kAkU) or मावशी (mAvashI) i.e aunty and an unknown gentleman as काका(kAkA) i.e. uncle. In western society, this will sound quite odd.
In India family members share closer relations. Relations that in the US would be called “very extended family” or just “relation”; can be too close in India.
Note About भाचा-पुतण्या(bhAchA-putaNyA)
The only man will call his brother’s son as पुतण्या(putaNyA) and brother’s daughter as पुतणी(putaNI).
But a lady will call her brother’s son as भाचा(bhAchA) and brother’s daughter as भाची(bhAchI).
Man and Lady both will call sister’s son as भाचा(bhAchA) and sister’s daughter as भाची(bhAchI).
So you can remember the relationship-pairs as:
काका – पुतण्या/पुतणी kAkA-putaNyA/putaNI
मामा – भाचा/भाची (mAmA-bhAchA/bhAchI)
मावशी – भाचा/भाची ( mAvashI-bhAchA/bhAchI )
आत्या – भाचा/भाची (AtyA-bhAchA/bhAchI)
